SPRING 2023

Alice está en el último curso estudiando Lenguas Modernas y Gestión Empresarial. Ella habla francés, puesto que creció en Francia y estudia español. Ella ha trabajado en un colegio en Lion y estudió en Alicante durante su año en el extranjero. Ella quiso participar en el proyecto SAAM ya que este realiza una importante labor para las organizaciones asociadas. Además, también es una gran oportunidad para trabajar y perfeccionar sus conocimientos de traducción. Le gusta viajar, cocinar y hace poco empezó a aprender a esquiar.

SPRING 2023

Charlie estudia un máster en Estudios de Traducción Aplicada después de terminar la carrera de Francés y Español en la Universidad de Leeds (Inglaterra). Ha vivido en Francia, y allí, enseñaba Inglés a estudiantes de instituto, y, además, le encantaría volver en un futuro. Charlie se presentó al proyecto porque tiene muchas ganas de aprender sobre subtitulación y de ser voluntario para una causa tan importante. Fuera de la universidad, le encanta el críquet, el golf y ver películas.

AUTUMN 2022

Ben nació en Suiza y a los siete años se mudó a Inglaterra. Actualmente estudia Comunicación Intercultural y Gestión Empresarial en la Universidad de East Anglia (UEA). Es uno de los alumnos en práctias del semestre de otoño de 2022. Se decantó por este puesto debido a su pasión por la accesibilidad de contenidos multimedia que surgió a raiz del entusiasmo de Carlos al dirigir su seminario «Herramientas tecnológicas para la accesibilidad de contenidos multimedia». Ben es un estudiante activo dentro de la UEA, siendo el Vicepresidente y Secretario Social de la Sociedad de Patinaje durante dos años consecutivos.

AUTUMN 2022

Jac estudia Traducción, Medios de Comunicación y Lenguas Modernas. Hizo un voluntariado para SAAM en su segundo año en la UEA y ahora es una de las becarias del semestre de otoño de 2022. Habla inglés, español y twi fluido, ya que es de Ghana. Es una apasionada del aprendizaje de idiomas y le encanta comunicarse con gente de diversos orígenes. Al haber ejercido como trabajadora de apoyo para niños con necesidades especiales, comprende la importancia de unos medios de comunicación accesibles para la gente ciega, sorda, o con dificultades auditivas y e encantaría seguir un camino que le permita tener un rol importante a la hora de mejorar la accesibilidad para todo el mundo.

SPRING 2022

Ella es una estudiante de cuarto año de Lenguas Modernas. Aunque es de Colchester, actualmente está realizando su Erasmus en Madrid hasta enero. Ha sido voluntaria de SAAM durante tres años y este curso visitó la Universidad de Alcalá para conocer a los voluntarios y ayudar a impartir una clase de subtitulación. Le encanta el proyecto porque le ha ayudado a desarrollar sus habilidades y a ganar confianza en el uso del software OOONA. Después de graduarse, quiere trabajar como traductora audiovisual especializada en subtitulación.

AUTUMN 2021

Nusaiba es de Dhaka, Bangladesh, y está en segundo de Literatura Inglesa y Filosofía en UEA. Habla 6 idiomas y está aprendiendo el séptimo. Por ello, SAAM le pareció la oportunidad perfecta para desarrollar su interés por las lenguas y la comunicación además de ayudar a la comunidad que la rodea. Considera que trabajar con SAAM, bajo la maravillosa dirección de Carlos, ha sido increíblemente gratificante.

SPRING 2019, AUTUMN 2020 – SPRING 2021

Eva está realizando un máster en Traducción Literaria en UEA. Es voluntaria desde 2018, exceptuando su periodo en el extranjero como estudiante Erasmus. Le apasiona subtitular y trabajar con el resto de voluntarios. Apoya la misión de SAAM sobre hacer de los medios un recurso más accesible y está tremendamente orgullosa de los proyectos que ha llevado a cabo desde sus inicios. Lo que más le llena es que los subtítulos no sólo ayudan a los voluntarios a ganar experiencia sino que tienen un impacto real a nivel social.

Una vez se gradúe tiene claro que quiere dedicarse a la subtitulación de manera profesional.

AUTUMN 2019 – SPRING 2020

Katherine Wright is a final year translation and interpreting student at UEA, working with French and Spanish. She decided to join the SAAM project to help gain practice using WinCaps, a feature of the technological tools modules that she studies, as well as practising her translation skills. She also finds the work incredibly rewarding and important, considering the impact it has on helping charities to achieve their goals and helping more people to be able to access audio-visual media. Thanks to working with this project, she has been inspired to study audio-visual translation at Masters level and to go on to make it her career. In her free time, Katherine enjoys playing the clarinet, spending time with friends, and improving her language skills.

AUTUM 2018

Izzy is from Cheshire, England. She is currently in her final year studying Translation, Media, and Spanish at UEA. After taking the module Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing in her second year, she became interested in creating accessible media through the use of subtitles. She therefore wanted to join the SAAM Project in order to become a part of the solution to the problem of inaccessibility within different media forms, due to language barriers. Her interests include, watching films, music, and knitting.

‘Doing the SAAM internship has been a really challenging and rewarding experience for me. I have really enjoyed learning more about the creation and editing of subtitles for videos, not only in English but in French and Spanish too! The aspects of the internship which I found most challenging were figuring out how to properly export the videos so that the subtitles matched the timings of the video. However, once I had managed to get the videos working properly, I found it very rewarding to be able to look at the work I had done, and know that it would go towards helping not just the organisations we are creating the subtitles for, but also anyone who goes on to watch those videos. I have already been able to use my experience as the SAAM intern, in order to complete my Bronze UEA Award, and now have it on my CV showing the huge amount of experience I have now gained in a field I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to be a part of. I would definitely recommend this internship to any students who also have an interest in subtitling and working with NGOs.’

Mariya es de Bulgaria, pero vive en Madrid, España. Estudia Lenguas Modernas y Traducción en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. Decidió participar como voluntaria en el proyecto SAAM porque le interesa la traducción audiovisual y adquirir más experiencia. Además, quiere contribuir a que los medios audiovisuales sean más accesibles.

Isabel es de Villanueva de la Serena, Badajoz. Es estudiante de Lenguas Modernas y Traducción en Alcalá de Henares. Se ha apuntado a este proyecto porque le encanta la traducción audiovisual y además siempre ha querido formar parte de alguna organización para ayudar a los demás sin ánimos de lucro. Además que también le va a serbir para aprender y tener más experiencia.

Laaziza Labrahimi Carmona is a 21-year-old senior at University of Alcalá studying Modern Languages and Translation. As her father is Moroccan and her mother is Spanish, the mixture of languages and cultures have always played a crucial role in her life. She decided to join in with SAAM Project since this way she could mix and perform two of her passions at once: her interest and curiosity about the Audiovisual field and her concern on helping charities to be internationally recognized. In her free time, she loves listening to music, going for walks, gathering with family and friends and meeting new people.

SPRING 2022

Natalia is a 21-year-old senior at University of Alcalá studying Modern Languages and Translation. She has always loved languages, from a very young age. She has always been good at them, especially English. She was never sure what she wanted to study until she found out about the degree in Translation. Today, as she is about to finish her degree, she is happy with her choice. She has been on ERASMUS in Southampton, a small city in the south of England, and it has been one of the best experiences she has had. She has learnt a lot about the language, culture, education and people. This project is another step in her educational and work experience.

AUTUM 2021

Amanda is a 21-year-old final-year undergraduate at the University of Alcalá, studying Modern Languages and Translation. She can speak Spanish, English and French. She has always been very interested in learning about new cultures and languages; this led her to take part in many different exchange programs from a very young age. She has also worked and studied abroad. When she found out about SAAM Project, she immediately wanted to be part of it, inspired by their philosophy of helping others through what she specialises in: translation, added to the fact that she has always been keen on audiovisual translation. She is particularly committed to the Feminist cause and Civil Rights, and whenever she can she is involved in some kind of activism.

AUTUMN 2020 – SPRING 2021

Giulia studies Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá. She is currently on her Year Abroad, studying Translation and Interpreting at the University of East Anglia. She is Brazilian, but she lives in Spain. Therefore, languages have always had a very important role in her life. She decided to join the SAAM project due to her wish to continue to work with social awareness and bringing accessibility everywhere. The SAAM project also had a significant impact on her academic development, as up to that moment, she had not had any kind of subtitling module. In her free time, she enjoys playing Touch Rugby and collaborating with Erasmus Students Network Association.

AUTUMN 2019 – SPRING 2020

Pilar is from Burgos in Spain. She is studying Translation and Modern Languages at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Madrid. She is interested in being a part of the SAAM project because she would like to have a career in audio-visual translation, after completing her degree. Some of her hobbies include performing arts, and anything to do with cinema.

AUTUMN 2018 – SPRING 2019

Melissa is in her final year studying Modern Languages and Translation at the university of Alcalá, in Madrid. She was born in Venezuela but has lived in Spain for her whole life. Melissa wanted to become a part of SAAM because she thinks it will be a great opportunity for her to gain experience in translation, as well as being able to meet new people who share her love for languages. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys reading books and watching TV series.

AUTUMN 2018 – SPRING 2019

Roberto is a student at the University of Alcalá de Henares, studying Modern Languages and Translation. Roberto wanted to participate in the SAAM Project because he wants to gain experience working in the field of translation, so that he is better prepared for a professional career. He also finds audio-visual translation interesting in terms of language use and code-switching. Some of Roberto’s hobbies include reading and playing video games.

SPRING 2023

Fanny tiene 27 años, está en Máster 2 Idiomas y Sociedades “Bilingüe-bicultura”, programa Traducción-traductología en ingles y español en la Universidad de Lorraine en Nancy. Ha ocupado el puesto de coordinadora de proyecto durante un trimestre en el marco de su práctica de fin de máster. Fanny quiere volverse traductora especializada, subtituladora particularmente. Por ello el proyecto SAAM mantuvo toda su atención con los servicios de traducciones interlingüística e intralingüística y de subtitulaje que propone, además de los valores de intercambio y de solidaridad que lleva el proyecto y que son semejantes con sus convicciones.

En la era digital, la accesibilidad a los materiales audiovisuales es, según ella, una lucha de actualidad para la inclusión de todos.

AUTUMN 2022

Lidia tiene 21 años y está titulada en Lenguas, Literaturas, Civilizaciones Extranjeras y Regionales, con especialidad en inglés. Le gusta mucho la traducción y quiere hacer de ella su profesión. Ya ha trabajado con el Proyecto SAAM en 2021 durante su periodo de prácticas y continúa este año como voluntaria. También trabaja como voluntaria con otra asociación para traducir y transcribir en su tiempo libre.

AUTUMN 2022

Julie nació y creció en Nancy, Lorraine. Está haciendo un máster en Traducción en la escuela superior de intérpretes y traductores (ESIT) de París con la combinación de idiomas francés-inglés-español. En su momento, el proyecto SAAM le permitió mejorar sus competencias traductoras y aprender más sobre la traducción audiovisual. Este es el motivo por el que ha querido continuar con la experiencia este semestre. Durante su tiempo libre, a Julia le gusta leer, escribir, cocinar y pasar tiempo con sus amigos. Le encanta estudiar nuevos idiomas y le gustaría aprender algunos más, pero por ahora habla francés, inglés, español e italiano.

Mariia is from Ukraine and is currently in her final year of study for a Master's degree at Université de Lorraine. She studies translation and her working languages are English, French, and Russian. Mariia joined the SAAM Project because she wanted to make good use of her translation skills to help charities. Also, it was an opportunity for her to develop new skills, gain experience working for an organization that wants to make a difference. In her spare time, she enjoys drawing, singing and reading.

SPRING 2022

Chloé is a 24 French Master's degree student at Université de Lorraine of Nancy, studying translation, mainly from English to French. She intends to become a professional translator very soon. She decided to join the SAAM Project as an intern to complete her Master's degree but also because she thought it would be an opportunity to practise and improve her skills in translation and subtitling and that working for charitable organisations would be very rewarding. In her spare time, Chloé likes reading, drawing, listening to music and playing video games.

Bonjour! Luka Gille is an exchange student from Nancy in France. He has always had a deep running interest in translation and humanitarianism, but never had the opportunity to work at a professional level. Coming to UEA and participating in the SAAM project has helped him to improve his translation skills A LOT, as well as teaching him other skills such as time management and data organisation. He now feels way more confident!
