Kiah is originally from Blackpool, England, and is in the process of working for a BA in Translation, Media and Japanese. She decided to join the SAAM project to complement another of her modules, "Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing". Having the opportunity to practise her subtitling skills, using professional materials and working for charitable organisations, has been very rewarding. She recognises the importance for everyone to be able to access the media in their native language. Her hobbies include crafts, knitting and crochet and she is learning how to play the harp.

Yuriko is a UEA visiting student from Osaka in Japan who is currently studying translation from English into Japanese. Yuriko’s interest in translation comes from her love of finding solutions to puzzles and she particularly enjoys the challenge of finding suitable phrases for translation. A recent member of the SAAM team, Yuriko decided to join because she wanted to challenge herself and she relishes the opportunity of helping charitable organisations.

Georgia is originally from Nottingham and is in her final year, studying Spanish at the UEA. After returning from a year abroad in Madrid, working for the British Council as a Language Assistant, she has continued her studies, with a particular interest in the practical modules in Translation Work Experience, Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing and an Introduction to British Sign Language. Georgia decided to join SAAM because she is considering a career in subtitling or accessibility. Taking part in the SAAM Project has given Georgia a great opportunity to expand her skills with the WinCAPS software and to be part of a recognised project under the guidance of the university. She works part-time as a Fragrance Adviser and is keen on fashion and music.

Melanie is from Chertsey, Surrey and studies Modern Languages: French, at the UEA, enjoying all the language opportunities that the university offers. Melanie decided to join the SAAM Project as it was a genuine opportunity to practise her subtitling skills, whilst offering a practical help to charities looking to provide access to the media for those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. The project has acted as a complement to other translation opportunities provided by her course at UEA, such as translating for French museums, and interpreting practise in hospitals. In her spare time, Melanie likes to swim and play video games.

Born in Santander (Spain), Daniel holds a degree in Translation, Media and Modern Language from the University of East Anglia. He is currently studying for the MA in Applied Translation Studies at the same university. The reason Daniel joined SAAM is that he has a special interest in Audiovisual Translation with accessibility for all. He has done some research on the constraints of dubbing irony, focusing on The Simpsons TV Series.

Ceri Pollard is originally from York, UK and is currently in her final year studying French, Translation and Media at the University of East Anglia (UEA), with a particular interest in translation and translation theory. A self-confessed language junkie, Ceri also enjoys the cinema and is a committee member of the Knitting and Crochet Society at UEA. By taking part in the SAAM project, she hopes to practice subtitling and gain practical experience with genuine organisations, before venturing out into a career as an audiovisual translator.

Bea is from Bristol and came to the UEA to study Japanese, Media and Translation. Living in Japan for a year, learning about another culture and putting new language skills to practical use has been one of the highlights of her degree course. Bea enjoys being part of the SAAM project and helping to make media more accessible for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Bethany has particularly enjoyed the practical aspects of the project, with the opportunity to work with real companies and gaining hands-on experience using the technological tools for subtitling and dubbing. Her hobbies include art, crafts, fashion and technology.

Bethany is currently in the final year of a French degree at UEA. Originally from Hull, but currently living in Norwich, she now has a place to start a Primary PGCE specialising in French at UEA. Bethany decided to join the SAAM project because she is doing a subtitling and dubbing module this semester. She is particularly interested in learning more about subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, which complements one of her elective modules in British Sign Language. In her free time she plays for the UEA Ultimate Frisbee team.

Originally from Crewe in Cheshire, Charlotte is studying Translation and Interpreting with French and Japanese. She has enjoyed the opportunities given by her degree, such as studying in Japan and work experience in translation. Charlotte’s interest in this project was sparked by her desire to help charitable organisations and produce content they could use. The opportunity would enable her to help others whilst at the same time improve her practical subtitling skills. Her other interests include travelling and video games.

Leo is originally from Essex and is currently studying for a double honours degree in Translation and Interpreting with French and Spanish at the UEA. He has a particular interest in translation and the challenges that this discipline brings. Leo decided to join the SAAM project as he felt he wanted to gain more experience in subtitling and working with WinCaps software. The fact that the project also benefits different charities makes it, in his view, an excellent initiative and one that he is proud to be part of. Outside of his degree course, Leo is interested in music and sport.

Alex comes from London and studies Spanish at the UEA. He decided to join the SAAM project, giving him an opportunity to gain more experience in subtitling as he is considering a career in audiovisual translation. He enjoys learning to speak a different a language and understanding different cultures. His interests include music, playing the trombone, rugby, travelling.
