Alice Koren
Alice is from Trieste, Italy, and is currently in her final year at the UEA studying Modern Languages: French and Spanish. She is taking a module called Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing, which combines her love of languages with that of films and TV series. She decided to join the SAAM project to gain more experience in audiovisual translation, as this is a career she is very interested in. It is also an opportunity to practise and improve using the subtitling software, while helping charitable and non-profit organisations. Some of her hobbies include reading, dancing and music.

Alicia Muñoz Fernández
Alicia is originally from Salamanca, Spain, and is studying Translation and Interpreting in Seville. She is currently in her year abroad at the UEA. Alicia decided to join SAAM because she is considering a career in subtitling and dubbing. Moreover, she believes that taking part in the SAAM Project is a great opportunity to develop her audiovisual skills with the WinCAPS programme as well as gaining experience as a translator with non-profit organizations. She loves learning new languages, watching TV series and she has a particular interest in slang and its constraints when it comes to translation.

Beth Forsdyke
Beth is originally from Leicester, and is in her final year of Translation, Media and Japanese at UEA. Thanks to discovering ‘fansubs’ through Japanese media when she was younger, she has always had an interest in subtitling, and joined SAAM to gain some experience of working with real organisations using professional subtitling software. She particularly likes that SAAM gives her the opportunity to help make subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. In her spare time her hobbies are reading, cooking, and video games.

Chris Dounavis
Chris is from Greece, but has lived in Norwich for 18 years now. He’s currently in his final year at UEA, studying Japanese, Media and Translation. Having spent a year in Japan for the 3rd year of his degree was one of the best experiences of his life and without a doubt the biggest highlight of his degree. He chose to take part in the SAAM project as it was an opportunity to give something back to his local community, while at the same time it complements one of the modules he chose – “Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing”. The practical side of the module in particular has been one of the most interesting aspects, which simultaneously allows him to gain practical experience with some of the tools used in subtitling and dubbing. His interests include video games, anime, tattoos and staying fit and active.

Carol Waleed Fathi Abdelmonem
Carol is a Modern Languages student, studying Spanish and Japanese, who loves working with languages. In particular she is interested in making language accessible to everyone and would like to make her own contribution towards this goal. Moreover, as she is currently taking the Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing module, she wanted to gain more practical experience. The SAAM project has presented the perfect opportunity for her to do so. Finally, in her free time Carol enjoys taking part in sport and travelling.

Holly Miller
Originally from Leicester and in her second year at UEA, Holly is studying French and Spanish with Translation and Interpreting. She decided to join the SAAM Project as she felt it would be a great opportunity to gain extra practice in subtitling, so helping her with the module Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing, she’s taking this semester. Holly believes that this project will be challenging, but will be a great opportunity to learn lots both in translation and in subtitling. Taking part in this project and helping charitable organisations, she feels, will be very rewarding.

Ivy - Xueying Zhang
Ivy is originally from Shanghai, China. It is her final year studying Intercultural Communication with Business Management here at the UEA. Ivy decided to join the SAAM project because she wants to develop her skills of using professional subtitling software, promoting creativity and expanding her linguistic skills. The project helps with non-profit organisations, which in her opinion, is very rewarding. Her interests include travelling, playing guitar and snowboarding.

Lee Li
Yadong originally comes from China and is in his final year studying Intercultural Communication with Business Management. He plans to work in the media industry after finishing her studies in the UK, thus, decided to choose Technological tools for Subtitling and Dubbing and Technological tools for Media Accessibility as his elective courses. Yadong’s hobbies are dubbing and acting and he is currently President of the Chinese Drama Society at UEA. He has also applied to study for a postgraduate degree for the media industry. He believes that the SAAM project will be good experience for his future study and career. He hopes to find more opportunities to improve his skills within the SAAM project.

María Aguín Blasco
Maria is an Erasmus student from the University of Zaragoza (Spain), where she studies a BA in English Philology. The reason Maria joined SAAM is that she has a special interest in Translation, an area in which she intends to specialize next year, and especially in Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing. She also expects this experience will help her to write a good dissertation this year. She enjoys helping others as much as possible and being involved in volunteering activities. She loves nature and music, and is the lead singer of a Spanish rock band.

Maria Simense
Maria is a final year student of Japanese, translation and media, and in the past has worked as a volunteer as an English language assistant. This is something that she has found very rewarding and this is what motivated her to volunteer for the SAAM Project, helping to make media more accessible for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Being part of the SAAM Project has in addition allowed her to further develop her subtitling skills, learned in the module Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing. In the future she aspires to work as a translator, and believes that this project will provide her with invaluable experience, both in terms of being able to help others, and for her own skills development.

Orla Condra
Orla is from Cambridge and studies French at UEA. She is a language enthusiast and loves learning new languages, believing that speaking a foreign language is an invaluable skill in today’s world. Alongside languages, she has a keen interest in cooking and sport. Since returning from her year abroad in Belgium, Orla has been studying translation modules and has found the Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing very interesting. She has decided to take part in the SAAM project to further practice her subtitling skills, as she is now considering a career in audio-visual translation.

Soledad González de la Blanca
Soledad is a student from Spain where she studies Translation and Interpreting in the University of Granada. She decided to take part in this project as it provides her with great professional practice. Soledad believes that the videos being subtitled are very important and will help give a greater understanding of issues, particularly in the area of child protection. She feels that being able to read the subtitles in one’s own native language, is a huge advantage. Soledad is now also thinking about subtitling as a future career and learning how to use Wincaps has been extremely useful. In her free time Soledad enjoys swimming and reading.

Yasmin Gorman
Yasmin is a second year UEA student taking a degree in Translation, Media and Spanish. She is a keen linguist who enjoys studying subjects she is passionate about. Yasmin had heard about this long-standing project (SAAM) and as Carlos is very active in her academic life, she was tempted to join the enterprise. Yasmin is now studying the Technical Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing module and believes that this project will provide her with an opportunity to practice her skills, enabling her to gain confidence as well as make a positive difference. When not studying Yasmin enjoys chilling and watching Netflix.
