UEA Team

  • Saskia Muff

    Saskia is currently doing a master’s degree in Media, Culture and Society, but she also did her undergraduate at UEA, studying Translation, Media and Spanish. Through studying British Sign Language (BSL), Saskia gained a real passion for improving accessibility wherever possible, which is what makes the SAAM Project so perfect to take part in. She has also studied Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing at UEA, where she first learnt about subtitling and really enjoyed it. Since then, she has also been a volunteer subtitle creator for UEATV.

  • Diren Dag

    Diren is in her final year of studying Environmental Science & International Development at UEA. She comes from London and joined SAAM to get her dose of language and culture immersion. Meeting new people and learning the nuances of translation has been her favourite part of the project.

  • Yaiza Tenero Garcia

    Yaiza is from Madrid, in Spain. She is studying Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid). She decided to volunteer for the SAAM project because she really likes audiovisual translation and thinks that this experience will be a great opportunity to learn even more. Also, she loves the idea of taking part of a group who helps other organisations and charities to achieve a common goal.

  • Leilany Carreno Fernandez

    Leilany is originally from Mexico, she studies Multilingual Communication with English, French and German at the University of Geneva in Switzerland and she is now at UEA for a semester abroad.  

    She decided to volunteer because one of her goals in life is to help improve people’s quality of life and to have a positive impact on society. 

    In SAAM she found just what she was looking for. To do her bit to make this world a little more inclusive and accessible by combining one of her passions: languages! 

    In her free time, she enjoys artistic activities, discovering new places and practicing aerial acrobatics.

  • Clara González Muñoz

    Clara is studying Translation and Interpreting (English-Spanish) at the University of Alicante, Spain, and is now at UEA for a year as part of the Erasmus programme. She loves languages and she is learning French and Arabic at the moment. She joined SAAM because she thinks this is the perfect opportunity to practice her translation and subtitling skills (as she would like to be an audiovisual translator) while helping charity organisations, so that their message can reach as many people as possible.

  • Eva Steiner

    Eva is a full-time student on the MA Literary Tanslation. She has been volunteering for SAAM since 2018, pausing only for her year abroad. She feels passionate about subtitling and loves collaborating with her fellow volunteers. She believes in the SAAM Project's mission of making media a little bit more accessible, one video at a time, and is proud of the work she has done and continues to do for SAAM. What she likes most about the project is knowing that the subtitles she helps produce are not just for practice but will benefit real people. She wants to do subtitling professionally after she graduates.

  • Rena Tang

    Rena is from Hong Kong. She is studying Society, Culture and Media at UEA. She is currently studying the module Technological Tools for Media Accessibility which makes her interested in helping to create subtitles for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. She wanted to join SAAM project because she finds creating subtitles in order to improve media accessibility is fulfilling and meaningful.

  • Jessica Powell

    Jessica is from Norfolk in England. She is currently doing her masters in Media, Culture, and Society, she previously studied at Coventry University. They joined SAAM because they thought it was a great opportunity to learn a new skill while doing something that is beneficial to others.

  • Claudia Mendes

    Claudia is a first-year student of Translation and Interpreting w/ Japanese and Spanish. She is a native English and Portuguese speaker but can also speak Spanish at a near-native level. Claudia joined SAAM because she wanted to be able to help those who are hard-of-hearing/deaf and to develop her audio-visual translations skills. She is very interested in SAAM, the charities that they’re involved with and is super excited to work with everyone involved with SAAM. 

  • Cheung Oi Lam (Kelly)

    Kelly is from Hong Kong. She is studying Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies at the Hong Kong Baptist University. She is glad to become a part of the SAAM project because she would like to step outside of her comfort zone by participating in different translation events. As a translator, she understands the importance of communication. This project provides her a chance to remove language barriers and encourage cultural exchanges. It is also a great opportunity to create audio-visual media with higher accessibility.  

  • Ella D’Arcy-Jones

    Ella is a fourth year modern languages student from Colchester who studied in Madrid for her year abroad last year. Ella has been a SAAM volunteer for three years and this summer she visited Alcalá University in Madrid with the SAAM project to meet the partner students help teach a class on subtitling. She loves the SAAM project because it has helped her to develop her subtitling skills and gain confidence in using the OOONA software. After graduating, Ella aspires to work in audiovisual translation, specialising in subtitling.

  • Elisa Pigino

    Ciao! My name is Elisa Pigino and I am from Italy. I am a final year student in translation and interpreting with French and Spanish at UEA. I am very excited to be able to take part in this rewarding project this year. There is no better way of showing and sharing my passion for laguages and translation than taking part in the SAAM project. By doing so, not only will I be helping the community and charitable organisations, but also will I improve my linguistic and translation skills.

  • Eimee Brown

    Eimee is a UEA alumna and French|Spanish|English translator from Hampshire, UK. She was first a member of the SAAM project back in 2017/18 during the final year of her BA in Translation and Interpreting. She has since lived and worked in France and completed an MA in Translation and Interpreting back in the UK.

    Eimee has always had a passion for languages and the SAAM Project creates the perfect environment in which to combine the exciting challenge of overcoming language barriers with the ability to provide accessible content to all those who need it through audiovisual translation.

    Some of her interests include fitness, drawing and music. And she has also kept her subtitling going since her UEA studies through mini personal projects.

  • Elisa Marinas Martinez

    Elisa is from Madrid, the capital of Spain. She is currently in her last year studying Translation and Interpreting with Modern Languages. Elisa was interested in joining the SAAM Project because she felt that it would be a good chance to gain experience in the field of translation on her last year uni, whileat the same time using her skills to help charity. In her free time, Elisa likes to read, listen to music, play the guitar and write.

  • Samantha Fazard

    Samantha is in her final year at UEA studying French. She decided to volunteer with SAAM because as part of her degree she is studying a subtitling module and wanted to explore this further, and the possibility to help with the accessibility of subtitles was really appealing. SAAM would also be a great way to practice translation and subtitling in the real world.

  • Ethan Tester

    Ethan is a final year Translation, Media and Modern Language student at UEA, who has just returned from studying in Toulouse for a year. He developed a keen interest in subtitling during the modules on offer at UEA and decided to join the SAAM Project in order to continue improving his skills in this area, but more importantly to help create content that is accessible for everyone.

  • Emily Ross

    Emily is a third-year student from Norwich studying Spanish at UEA. This is her second semester with SAAM, and she enjoys volunteering to make a difference to charities and NGOs while practicing her translation and subtitling skills.

  • Zac Vine

    Zack is from Chelmsford, England and is currently in his final year of studying Translation, Media, and French (with a year abroad) at UEA. He spent his year abroad in Lyon and has spent a number of years learning different languages such as German and Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese). In his free time, he plays Ice Hockey for the first team at UEA. He decided to volunteer for SAAM because he wanted to use his experience in translation to serve a good cause.

  • Léo Depierre-Arzimanoglou

    Léo is a 21-year-old French student on a gap year. He works as a French teacher assistant in a London high school. He studied ‘English Linguistics, Literature and Culture’ at the Université Lyon 3 and did a year abroad at UEA last year.

    In 2020, he decided to volunteer for SAAM because he enjoys translating and was interested in discovering audiovisual translation. He also wanted to prepare a little before the beginning of his module ‘Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing’. A year after leaving UEA, he's still part of SAAMbecause it is a team project, he's not just translating on his own, as he usually does.

    In his free time, he loves talking about politics, going to the cinema and talking about the films he loves.

  • Rebecca Dampier

    Becca is a third year Film and Television student who is passionate about granting access to media to people from any country and with any ability. She is interested in finding out more about transcription and translation to help in her future career. In her spare time, she volunteers by editing a podcast which spread awareness about sight disabilities and brain injuries, and she also enjoys cooking.

  • Glo Alidu

    Glo Alidu is from Washington and is studying French, Media and Translation. She joined SAAM in winter 2021 and is continuing in the spring of 2022 because of her interest in subtitling which was strengthened by taking modules about it. She therefore wishes to be a helpful volunteer for SAAM.

  • Sonia de Antonio Mateo

    Sonia is a 21-year-old student of Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá. Her mother tongue is Spanish but she is also fluent in English and German. Sonia has always been interested in audiovisual translation, as she has been enjoying watching films and TV shows since she was a child. This early interest led Sonia to develop a fascination in foreign cultures and all the possible ways of understanding them. For all these reasons, and after spending a year studing abroad in contact with different environments, she discovered SAAM Project, which would help her improve a lot her translation skills while giving her the chance to help the others, which is something Sonia believes is fundamental in our modern society.

  • Francisco Barrera López

    Francisco is a 21-year-old student at the University of Alcalá. He is in his last year of the degree of Modern Languages and Translation. Since his childhood, he has been interested in learning foreign languages. Apart from his mother tongue, Spanish, he speaks English and German fluently and he is learning Portuguese and Italian. Regarding his interest, his other big passion is football, it does not matter the country or the team, he loves either national football or international football. In relation to translation, he is interested in audiovisual translation and he considers the SAAM project a great opportunity to evolve his translation skills with the languages he is used to working with (English and German>Spanish) and to improve his subtitling skills.

  • Alicia Carreras Hernández

    Alicia is a 21-year-old student at the University of Alcalá, learning Modern Languages and Translation and speaking Spanish, English and German. She has always enjoyed learning languages and trying new skills and activities. This project means a possibility to learn something new with great people and to keep exploring the opportunities that audiovisual translation offers, which is something she is recently looking forward to. She also loves music (whether it is singing, playing violin or piano, or simply listening), reading and watching films and series. She spends her free time on hobbies such as video editing, drawing and animation, writing, creating audiovisual content and learning about different things no matter the field, be it psychology or vet medicine. Nature walks with her dog make days worth it.

  • Lucía Carrión Pardo

    Lucía is a student of Translation at UAH with a particular interest in subtitling and digital media. By participating in the SAAM project, she hopes to be part of a team that helps society. She also sees it as a wonderful opportunity to grow in the field of Audiovisual Translation.

  • Julia Castro Lorenzo

    Julia is a 21-year-old senior, studying Modern Languages and Translation at University of Alcalá. She has always been fascinated by different cultures and their languages. She is very passionate about helping people and this SAAM project has proved a great oppportunity to mix both passions. Her native languages are Galician and Spanish, her English is at a C2 level and she also has some Portuguese and French knowledge. She has always been interested in the audiovisual world, therefore audiovisual translation is a great way to combine her knowledge and her interests.

    Her hobbies include discovering new music, going on adventures with friends, writing short stories, reading books and watching tv shows and films.

  • Sara Clemente García

    Sara is a 21-year-old student at the University of Alcalá, where she studies Modern Languages and Translation. Since she was a child, she has been very interested in languages and other cultures. This led her to choose this degree and to take the opportunity to live in Germany for a year, where she greatly increased her intercultural skills. For her, this project is a great possibility to learn more about audiovisual translation, a field she has just discovered this year, but one that really catches her attention. On the other hand, in her free time she loves dancing, listening to music, watching series and hanging out with her friends.

  • Elena Collado Hervás

    Elena is a 21-year-old student of Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá with Spanish, English and German. She decided to join the SAAM Project because she really enjoys subtitling and translation, and wanted to help non-profit organizations. It is also a great opportunity for gaining experience on Audiovisual Translation, working in teams and meeting new people. In her free time, she likes playing video games and watching films and series.

  • Corina N Hutanu

    Corina is a 22 year old student. Growing up bilingual she decided that she wanted to pursue a career in languages so she is currently finishing her degree in Modern Languages and Translation. Corina decided to join SAAM Project as she has always wanted to do something good for others and this was a fantastic opportunity to do so.

  • Luciana Docampo

    Luciana was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but she has been living in Spain for many years. She is currently in her final year studying Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá. She decided to join the SAAM team because it is not only an exceptional opportunity to develop her translation and subtitling skills, but also to support a project that aims to contribute to the accessibility of audiovisual content, which is essential. She is passionate about almost any form of art and, therefore, likes to spend her free time exploring the fields of literature, cinema, painting, music... as well as improving her language skills.

  • Estíbaliz Donalonso Hermira

    Estíbaliz is a 21-year-old student at the University of Alcalá. She is at her last year of Modern Languages and Translation. Since her childhood, she has been a communication enthusiast. Indeed, her earliest contact with a foreign language was at birth: her parents addressed her in Spanish and French. Also, she started studying English at the age of two, and that allowed her to develop a strong interest in languages throughout her life. She is passionate about the possibility of creating effective cross-linguistic connections and communication among people, regardless of their background. She loves theatre (watching it and acting), cinema, music, riddles, learning new things, and well-told stories. She has a keen interest in people. In this vein, SAAM has awakened her curiosity, and the desire to further improve her translating skills.

  • Laura García-Gil Sánchez

    Laura is a 21-year-old student on her last year in the University of Alcalá. She studies Modern Languages and Translation. She is interested on AVT, specially on subtitling. Laura sees SAAM Project as a good oportunity for both: to help people and to gain experience on the Audiovisual translation field. In her free time, she loves to watch series on Netflix, play videogames or go out with her friends.

  • Ana Isidro Martínez

    Ana is a 23-year-old student of Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá. She loves learning languages and their cultures. She is also a Graphic Designer and loves creating new things. That's why she participates in SAAM Project, in order to create new content that people might need. In her free time she loves reading, listening to music and watching series and films (above all Disney and Pixar ones).

  • María López Cuesta

    María is a student of Modern Languages and Translation at University of Alcalá. She decided that she wanted to become a translator when she was 13. She became interested in audiovisual translation during the fourth year of the degree, so working with SAAM Project will be a great opportunity to acquire and develop her skills whilst helping people who may not have access to different media forms. Among the activities that she enjoys the most outside her academic life are horse riding, drawing, and reading.

  • Clara Plaza Delmas

    Clara is a 21-year old student at the University of Alcalá. She is in her last year of Modern Languages and Translation. With her mother being French and her father beign Spanish, Clara has always been surrounded by different languages and cultures, which have eventualy awakened in her the interest in languages and interlingual communication. She is very passionate about cultural exchange and the research of cultural differences. This has led her to study Japanese. She has seen in SAAM the possibility to develop herself as a translator while also giving a voice to the associations collaborating with SAAM and helping people at the same time. In her free time, Clara likes practicing taekwondo, cooking (either for herself, her family or her friends) and going for a walk in nature.

  • Alba Romero Navas

    Alba is a 22 year-old student of Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá. She can speak Spanish, English, French, and she also started learning Chinese a few years ago. Ever since she was young, Alba has always shown a great interest in learning about new cultures, languages and traditions. As a person with ambition for new knowledge, Alba is always learning about new things, whether related to her studies or not. This natural curiosity made her want to join the SAAM team, with the hopes of gaining some real experience in the subtitling field, while also getting to work with like-minded people. She loves discovering new music, videogames, places, and she's all about good literature.

  • Victoria Vizuete Moreno

    Victoria is a 21-year-old student. She studies Modern Languages and Translation at the University of Alcalá. Being proficient in English, French and Spanish, she is also studying Catalan, Korean and Japanese. Because she always dreamed to subtitle for Disney, and translate their songs, Vicky -as she is usually known by her family and firends- found in SAAM Project the oportunity to improve her translating skills, and a way to help whoever needs it thanks to her work. In her free time, she loves to watch TV series, reading books, listening to music, hang out ith friends, and create playlists for whichever thing she is obsessed with at the moment.

  • Catherine Bolssens

    Catherine Bolssens, an undergraduate student in English studies from Belgium. She is a French-speaking, and aims to be a translator in the future. She chose to work along with the SAAM Project primarily because she would gain significant experience in translation, but moreover, she is proud to take part in a project that matters and for once gives her the feeling that she may actually be able to help some people. According to her, there is no greater reward in life than to feel useful.

  • Emmy Arnould

    Emmy is a French student at the Université de Lorraine and studies English to become an English teacher. She is fond of languages, mythology, theatre, reading, and also writes poetry, both in French and English. Her mother tongue is French, but she is quite fluent in English (level C1) and can also speak Spanish (level B2), and can understand Italian as well, as she has learned this language during three years in high school. She is interested in SAAM because it's a good opportunity to practice translation and she thinks her language skills can be useful.

  • Elisa Amouriq

    Elisa is a first-year student in languages, English and Spanish, at the University of Lorraine, in France. She joined SAAM as she wanted to improve her translation skills, and was eager to help charities and other associations which needed it. She would like to work as a translator when she finishes her studies.

  • Hanri Galmiche

    Henri is a third-year student at the University of Lorraine, where he is studying English and German. He is especially interested in translation and interpretation. He quickly volunteered when he heard about SAAM Project. The project is for him an opportunity to learn how to translate with others. Otherwise, Henri derives great pleasure from drawing - when he does it, once in a blue moon.

  • Jeanne Boulogne

    Jeanne is 20 and she is from a small village near Nancy. She studies foreign languages (English and Italian literature and culture) at Université de Lorraine but she is currently in Italy with the Erasmus program. She loves going on a daily walk, reading, cooking and especially going out with her friends or meeting new people. She has always wanted to meet a lot of people in order to exchange, to share, to understand each other. That is why later, she would like to become a French teacher for foreigners; because she would be proud to share the French culture but also to learn about the other one.

  • Julie Soutra

    Julie was born and raised in Nancy, France. She is in her third year of studies in English and Spanish language and culture at the University of Lorraine, and she specialises in Translation and Interculturality. The SAAM project is the opportunity for her to improve her translation skills and learn more about audiovisual translation, all the while doing something that counts. In her free time, Julie enjoys reading and writing, cooking, and spending time with her friends. She loves learning new languages and is interested in learning many, but as for now, she speaks French, English, Spanish and Italian.

  • Lallie Corbeel

    Lallie is from Nancy, France and is currently in her third year of studying translation and English at the Université de Lorraine. She decided to join the SAAM project because she started subtitling during her term abroad in Colchester and wanted to continue. She wants to work in translation, so SAAM project is an opportunity for her to keep training in subtitling and in translation.

  • Lidia Lassed

    Lidia Lassed is a french 3rd year undergraduate student in English BA and she studied at UEA during the autumn semester. She is very interested in learning everything about audiovisual translation since she would like to make it her job. She has a lot of experience in different types of translation ( specialized, advanced, literary, CAT with Trados etc. and in interpreting) Moreover, Lidia is also interested in discovering more about voluntary translation for organizations such as SAAM, it will be her first experience of this kind. Apart from French and English, she is also studying Spanish as her third language (B2 level).

  • Lalie Knott

    Lalie is a qualified interpreter in the UK, she holds a computer science degree and works in this field. She joined the SAAM project to help charities in lowering language barriers and making information available to a wider audience. She has plans to build her linguistic experience as a translator.

  • Noémie Medan

    Noémie is from Pau, France. She is currently living in Nancy where she studies Spanish. She also has a bachelor’s degree in History with a specialization in Politic Sciences. She lived in Haiti, Dominican Republic and French Guyana, which nourished her interest for foreign languages and cultures, and brought her to the universe of translation, especially literary translation. With this in mind, volunteering at SAAM Project’s internship would be a huge opportunity for her to explore another field of translation.

  • Nazim Arabi

    Originating from Algeria, Nazim is a 29 year old student, who currently is in his third year studying English and Translation at the Université de Lorraine in Nancy, France. He decided to join the SAAM Project for his L3 internship to improve his translation and language skills and develop subtitling skills, but also because he is eager to help charity organizations. Some of Nazim's interests include watching TV shows and movies, reading and learning new skills. 

  • Pauline Boulanger

    Pauline Boulanger is a French third-year student in English BA at University of Lorraine in Nancy. Her major is translation in French and English ( with a C2 level in French and C1 level in English) she has a lot of experience in different types of translation as advanced, specialised, literary or CAT with Trados software, and she has some first experiences in interpreting as well. She is also studying French Sign Language at university since she is a fresher and she has studied at UEA during the autumn semester 2021. She is interested in SAAM project because it gives her the opportunity to learn more about translation especially audio-visual translation, which is new to her. She is looking forward to starting the project because it is the first time that she is going to be volunteer in something and she loves discovering new things.

  • Paul Etienne

    Paul is from Épernay, France. He is about to complete a bachelor's degree in English studies at the Université de Lorraine. Paul has been into subtitling for more than three years and used to translate English and French Youtube videos in his free time. He saw the SAAM project as a great opportunity to combine business with pleasure by doing the things he already likes and get recognised for it, all the while serving a good cause. He also found the idea of working with people from different countries very exciting. Paul speaks French and English fluently but would like to expand his repertoire by learning Japanese, German and more!

  • Tom Précheur

    Tom always had a passion for translation and subtitling, this idea of sharing culture and shattering down language barriers is what drives him to throw himself with enthusiasm in the SAAM Project. He is a native French speaker and studies translation at the University of Lorraine with the aim of becoming a translator for a publishing house specialized in the Fantasy genre. He thinks that the SAAM project is a way for him to further improve his skills in translation and broaden his horizons; in his eyes, the SAAM project offers more than just voluntary work, it offers a human experience!

  • Clotilde Gougelin

    Clotilde is a 20-year-old English student (LLCER; Licence Littératures, Civilisations Etrangères et Régionales), currently in her third year. As an orientation, she studies journalism. She would like to join the SAAM Project because she realized, while searching for an internship, that she was more interested in culture and tourism. However, as she watched the closing ceremony of the Olympics Games in Beijing, she found out that she liked translating what the people were saying, before the French journalists could translate it. About the project, she likes the fact that she could work during her free time, without it being a chore. She also thinks it is a good way to be more autonomous. She is very motivated and already had some experience in translation and subtitles.

  • Cathy Grandjean

    Cathy is a student at the university of Nancy in France, currently in her third and final year of the English language bachelor’s degree, she has specialised herself in translation.

    She decided to participate to the SAAM project as an intern in order to develop her skills in translation, and to have a first impression of the profession. Working on the SAAM team is a good way for her to develop her translating masterfulness, but it is also a good way for her to participate in a project that might help her understand what her future life as a translator is going to be like.

    In her free time, she enjoys painting, drawing, but she also spends quite a lot of time practising translation while reading novels in English or in French. She is also passionate about language and is eager to develop her knowledge in Spanish as well as Norwegian.
